PNH Guitar ARP Pres 02

PNH Guitar ARP Pres 02

This is the first picture, but this is already months into the project.

That is, of course, if you count (which I do) the month and a half we spent just reading and researching what to do with this pile of firewood that came with the kit.

But anyway, what you see here is the plywood frame we built along with the sides of the guitar, shaped, sized, and fit together with the heel and tail blocks.

To make the frame, we glued three sheets of plywood together (with an outline of the guitar drawn on the top piece) and screwed it down. Then, we cut the outline of the guitar out with a jigsaw (not to fine precision). When we wanted to take the sides in or out, we could unlatch the latch to the upper right and shove a big fat screwdriver in the jigsawed seam just underneath.

The sides came pre-bent but had lost most of their shape in shipping and sitting in our garage for 6 weeks. Dad devised a bending iron made from a 6" tube of stainless steel he'd cut from the leg of his fermenting tank so it'd fit into his commercial refrigerator... Anyway, we stuck this tube in a vice and propped a blowtorch in the end of it so it'd heat the top surface and went to work with the sides and a spray bottle of water.

We then shaped and sized the tail/heel blocks to radius using the sanding block in the right side of the picture. We had the block radiused to 16' at a machine shop, along with another at 28'. These were used extensively in the bracing, but I'll get to that later. I just bring it up because I don't think it's in any later pictures.

The centerpiece was just there to keep tension on the sides so they wouldn't warp, it was all about holding their shape until we got the soundboard and back all glued together.

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Official Guides to the Appalachian Trail)

A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail (Official Guides to the Appalachian Trail)

Back in America after twenty years in Britain, Bill Bryson decided to reacquaint himself with his native country by walking the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail, which stretches from Georgia to Maine. The AT offers an astonishing landscape of silent forests and sparkling lakes--and to a writer with the comic genius of Bill Bryson, it also provides endless opportunities to witness the majestic silliness of his fellow human beings.

For a start there's the gloriously out-of-shape Stephen Katz, a buddy from Iowa along for the walk. Despite Katz's overwhelming desire to find cozy restaurants, he and Bryson eventually settle into their stride, and while on the trail they meet a bizarre assortment of hilarious characters. But A Walk in the Woods is more than just a laugh-out-loud hike. Bryson's acute eye is a wise witness to this beautiful but fragile trail, and as he tells its fascinating history, he makes a moving plea for the conservation of America's last great wilderness. An adventure, a comedy, and a celebration, A Walk in the Woods is destined to become a modern classic of travel literature.

From the Trade Paperback edition.

Your initial reaction to Bill Bryson's reading of A Walk in the Woods may well be "Egads! What a bore!" But by sentence three or four, his clearly articulated, slightly adenoidal, British/American-accented speech pattern begins to grow on you and becomes quite engaging. You immediately get a hint of the humor that lies ahead, such as one of the innumerable reasons he longed to walk as many of the 2,100 miles of the Appalachian Trail as he could. "It would get me fit after years of waddlesome sloth" is delivered with glorious deadpan flair. By the time our storyteller recounts his trip to the Dartmouth Co-op, suffering serious sticker shock over equipment prices, you'll be hooked.
When Bryson speaks for the many Americans he encounters along the way--in various shops, restaurants, airports, and along the trail--he launches into his American accent, which is whiny and full of hard r's. And his southern intonations are a hoot. He's even got a special voice used exclusively when speaking for his somewhat surprising trail partner, Katz. In the 25 years since their school days together, Katz has put on quite a bit of weight. In fact, "he brought to mind Orson Welles after a very bad night. He was limping a little and breathing harder than one ought to after a walk of 20 yards." Katz often speaks in monosyllables, and Bryson brings his limited vocabulary humorously to life. One of Katz's more memorable utterings is "flung," as in flung most of his provisions over the cliff because they were too heavy to carry any farther.
The author has thoroughly researched the history and the making of the Appalachian Trail. Bryson describes the destruction of many parts of the forest and warns of the continuing perils (both natural and man-made) the Trail faces. He speaks of the natural beauty and splendor as he and Katz pass through, and he recalls clearly the serious dangers the two face during their time together on the trail. So, A Walk in the Woods is not simply an out-of-shape, middle-aged man's desire to prove that he can still accomplish a major physical task; it's also a plea for the conservation of America's last wilderness. Bryson's telling is a knee-slapping, laugh-out-loud funny trek through the woods, with a touch of science and history thrown in for good measure. (Running time: 360 minutes, four cassettes) --Colleen Preston

Yesterday

Yesterday

We went for a walk in the forest.
It was a pleasant day.
There were little children
but none was being eaten;
apparently the bears had been given
the day off. Trees predominated
as scenery. A small pond added
a comment regarding the beauty
of moisture. It felt pretty good.
Being outside in a world free
of commercial breaks can seem
a paradise. Once in a while
the sky appeared from out of nowhere
between a gap in the trees. It’s quite
astounding the way that works. After
the walk we sat on the porch
and reminisced. There was so much
to reminisce about. Birds took up
an entire chapter all by themselves.
I got some tea from the refrigerator
and everything became very quiet.
Somewhere news was happening
but not here.

Kitchen at the back of the 1st Floor

Kitchen at the back of the 1st Floor

This is a small utlity kitchen that DH Keith installed, after I removed my offices from the 1st floor of the house to a commercial building.

The doorway at the left of the photo leads into my Cutting Room.

I'm not very kitchen-skilled but use it to make tea. And the kitchen opens onto the back yard garden, so if I get sick of sewing, I can walk out the back door and sit in the garden for awhile.

Keith uses it an overflow party kitchen when he gives big parties and needs more oven and refrigerator space. And he stores party supplies and garden supplies in the wall of cabinets that you'll see in the next photo.

Orpheum Theater

Orpheum Theater

The Orpheum Theater, which was erected in the late 1890's to 1900 time period, was originally used as a vaudeville theater. The theater has a large auditorium with a balcony, a stage and back- stage area. It seats 688 people. In the 1920's, it was used as a movie theater. It became the new home for the performances of The Sioux Falls Community playhouse, in 1954, when the Community Playhouse Assoc. bought the theater, saving it from going into disrepair, giving it a great future, as a place for the arts to shine in Sioux Falls.
The Sioux Falls Community Playhouse's Main Stage Series produces five plays per season, and all performances are held in The Orpheum Theater. The family series does three and the Studio Series has two performances each season. Season's tickets and single ticket purchases are available.
The Orpheum Theatre is also host to many other cultural events. Nearly 100,000 patrons visit the Orpheum Theater yearly for over 100 events including concerts, private parties, plays, musicals, school functions and other community-oriented events.

MANIFESTATIONS:
An unknown ghost, known as "LARRY" haunts the playhouse and on rare occasions, has tried to communicate with the living, but only has managed to scare them instead.

1) Late one, very cold October night in 1959, an actor, by the name of Ray, was alone on the theatre's stage, putting in extra rehearsal time for an upcoming play. While walking through his staging, the script called for him to look up at the balcony. While doing so, he saw a growing, blue, pulsating light with a male apparition in the center, who was either pointing at him or waving him up to the balcony. At the same time, Ray felt he was in the middle of a cold air blast from an open freezer door. Ray quickly left and locked the door. LARRY took this as a rejection and was angry. On arriving the next day, all the newly wired fuses were found to be deliberately blown. Also, a sandbag, from above the stage, fell on Ray twice, which happened during the dress rehearsal and on opening night, knocking Ray out both times, despite careful precautions by the stage crew.

2) 1972 - Again, late at night, a technical director, Jack, was trying to ready the theater stage for the children who were coming to rehearse for an upcoming children's production, which was to start rehearsals the next day. As it was necessary to have a very clean stage area, Jack was carefully sweeping the stage from the left to the right of the stage. While sweeping, he heard a sound behind him. He looked a few steps behind him and saw an old, late 1890 's, tin- type picture of a bearded, 30ish man, with rosy cheeks about the size of a postage stamp. Jack put the mystery picture up on the light board, after turning on all the stage lights and saw no one living, who could've dropped the picture. After feeling a cloud of coldness settle over him, he left the building quickly, totally spooked. No one knows who the man in the picture was, but most assume it is a picture of LARRY. It stayed on the light board for some time before it mysteriously disappeared.

Jack didn't stay long enough to find out what LARRY was up to, by giving his picture to Jack. Perhaps, LARRY was trying to have a less flashy way to communicate with Jack, to introduce himself to Jack by giving him a picture of himself first, before trying to communicate with Jack directly.

WHO WAS "LARRY"?
No one knows for sure who he was. Newspaper records were destroyed in a fire years ago. Three theories exist.

1) He was a construction worker who was killed while the theater was being built.

2) He was a stage hand who was killed during a vaudeville show.

3) He was having an affair with a married woman and was killed in the balcony by the jealous husband.

4) This 3rd theory may be the most likely story, as Ray saw LARRY in the balcony when LARRY wanted Ray to come up to the balcony, to maybe directly communicate with him, as Ray had some psychic abilities.

Still Haunted?

Yes indeed.

A lot of theaters have their own unseen patrons, and so does The Orpheum Theater. LARRY will probably haunt this theater until he can successfully communicate with the living, and say what is on his mind. As contact with LARRY is rare, he will probably be there for a long time.
